Planning your Wedding Around the San Diego Weather

October 13th, 2009

When planning your wedding always be cautious of the weather in the area as a sudden rain storm or extreme heat can really ruin your plans for that backyard wedding. Here is some information specific to the San Diego weather which can help you determine what month is best for your wedding day plans! Also, always be prepared to rent a tent as your PLAN B just in case the weather is not cooperating with you on your wedding day.

Wedding Day Tent

JANUARY WEATHER IN SAN DIEGO

The average minimum temperature for the month is 49.7 degrees, the average maximum 65.8 degrees and the mean 57.8 degrees.  Daytime readings often reach 70 degrees and occasionally 80 degrees and on January 10 in 1953 rose to a high of 88 degrees. With an average of 7 days with rain it is the wettest month of the year.  The normal total is 2.28 inches but amounts vary widely from year to year ranging from 8.06 inches in 1995 to no rain in several Januarys.  Small hail has occurred occasionally. The sun shines 72 percent of the time possible and the average month has 12 clear, 8 partly cloudy and 11 cloudy days.

FEBRUARY WEATHER IN SAN DIEGO

In most Februarys the maximum reaches 70 degrees or even 80 degrees and once in 1921 it soared to 89 degrees. The mean rainfall for February is normally 2.04 inches.  The average number of rainy days is 6 but in 1884 a measurable amount occurred on 15 days with a total of 9.05 inches.  Sunshine averages 73 percent of possible with 11 clear…7 partly cloudy and 10 cloudy days.

MARCH WEATHER IN SAN DIEGO

Temperatures continue to climb in March and the monthly mean of 60.0 degrees is 1.1 degree higher than that of February and 2.2 degrees higher than that of January.  The average daily maximum is 66.3 degrees and the average daily minimum of 53.6 degrees. Occasionally hot dry winds from the interior have caused temperatures to rise well into the 80s and on four days into the 90s.  Still in the rainy season, March is normally the second wettest month averaging 2.26 inches and 7 days with measurable amounts.

 APRIL WEATHER IN SAN DIEGO

Temperatures continue to rise slowly through April and the monthly mean of 62.6 degrees is 2.6 degrees above that of March.  The average daily maximum is 68.7 degrees and the average daily minimum is 56.4 degrees.  As a rule April ushers in the night and early morning low clouds so characteristic of our summer and fall months, but the percentage of sunshine is little affected by the cloudiness and the average of 66 percent of possible sunshine is only slightly below that of the preceding months.

MAY WEATHER IN SAN DIEGO

May is normally characterized by persistent overcast skies during the night and morning hours and by less sunshine than any other month except June.  Temperatures continue their upward trend with the most noticeable rise in nighttime readings.  The normal daily maximum for the month is 69.3 degrees…the normal daily minimum 59.8 degrees and the mean 64.6 degrees.  On ten days the record maximum temperatures are in the 90s and were 98 degrees on May 25… 1896 the absolute high for may.  However…the cool sea breeze prevails nearly every day and temperatures above 80 degrees rarely have been reached.  Nights are uniformly mild and the lowest reading during the month was 45 degrees in 1915.

JUNE WEATHER IN SAN DIEGO

Temperature in June continues the slow rise of preceding months and the mean of 67.4 is 2.8 degrees above the mean for May.  The daily maximum averages 72.2 degrees and the daily minimum 62.6 degrees.  Changes from day to day normally have been small and 12 days since 1872 have had a maximum 90 degrees or higher.  The absolute high is 101 degrees in 1979.  Well into the dry season, June averages only one day with measurable rain and a monthly average of 0.09 inch.  Thunderstorms will occasionally develop in the mountains and deserts with monsoonal moisture. June is normally the cloudiest month of the year with only 57 percent of possible sunshine due largely to the persistence of overcast skies during the morning hours.

JULY WEATHER IN SAN DIEGO

Night and morning cloudiness continues through July…but afternoons are generally clear and bright.  Under the protective blanket of moist air from the pacific, temperatures are low for the latitude.  The daily maximum temperature rarely exceeds 85 degrees.  The highest temperature in July was 100 degrees in 1930 and the lowest temperature was 54 degrees in 1884.  The average daily maximum temperature is 75.8 degrees…the daily minimum 65.9 degrees and the monthly mean 70.9 degrees.  Hot…humid weather is almost unknown and as a result thunderstorms rarely occur…but July begins the thunderstorm season in the mountains and deserts. The month is in the heart of the dry season and rainfall is negligible averaging only 0.03 inch.

AUGUST WEATHER IN SAN DIEGO

August is normally our warmest month with the normal high of 77.8 degrees, the normal low 67.3 degrees and the monthly normal of 72.6 degrees.  Rain seldom falls in the city and 60 percent of the Augusts have been without a measurable amount.  The monthly rainfall average is 0.10 inch and the average number of rainy days with 0.01 inch or more is one.

SEPTEMBER WEATHER IN SAN DIEGO

National weather service records since 1872 show that about one third of the total number of days with a temperature of 90 degrees or higher in San Diego occurred in September…for an average of about one each year.  These high readings were almost invariably accompanied by hot…dry easterly winds in the county known as santa anas.  It was during one of these occurrences that the all time high of 111 degrees was recorded on September 26… 1963.  Our dry season continues through September and in more than half of the years no measurable amounts of rain were recorded during the month.  The normal rainfall is 0.24 inch with the greatest monthly total 2.58 inches in 1939.

OCTOBER WEATHER IN SAN DIEGO

October is the last of the dry months and is usually a transitional period with variable weather…a mixture that includes weather from the previous dry months with a preview of the upcoming wet months. The normal daily maximum temperature is 74.0 degrees and the normal daily minimum is 61.2 degrees with a mean monthly temperature of 67.6 degrees.  Extremes for the month range from 107 degrees in 1961 to 43 degrees in 1971. There are 2 days of measurable rain on the average…including one day of thundershowers.  These wet days usually occur late in the month as storm systems from the Pacific Northwest move farther south.  The average rainfall is 0.44 inch.  This is 0.23 of inch more than September…but 0.63 less than November.  October has plenty of sunshine with 68 percent of possible.

NOVEMBER WEATHER IN SAN DIEGO

November has a normal maximum temperature of 69.9 degrees and an average minimum of 53.6 degrees which shows the greatest mean range of any month.  It also shows a noticeable cooling trend and the mean temperature of 61.8 degrees is 5.8 degrees lower than for October.  Precipitation increases with the monthly average becoming 1.07 inches and the number of days with a measurable amount is 5. More sunshine can be expected in November than any other month. Total possible sunshine is 74 percent.

DECEMBER WEATHER IN SAN DIEGO

Winter as we know it in San Diego generally begins about the middle of December. Even then temperatures are moderate, the daily high averaging 66.3 degrees, the normal low 48.9 degrees and the mean 57.6 degrees or 4.2 degrees cooler than November. The normal rainfall increases to 1.31 inches and the days with measurable rain average 6.  Average sunshine is 73 percent of possible which is 2 percent less than in November. Clear day’s average 14, partly cloudy day’s average 7, and cloudy days average 10. The average number of days with heavy fog is 4, but there is a substantial variation from year to year.

When do I book my wedding florist?

September 8th, 2009

We recommend booking as far ahead as possible. It depends on your wedding date. For the busiest times of year (May/June and September/October) the earlier you contact us the better. 6-8 months before your wedding date is usually sufficient to secure our services. Although their might be openings last minute depending on our schedule.

Most florist will book more than one wedding per weekend and sometimes even per day. Ali Eli Florals prefers to only schedule one wedding per weekend to ensure 100% of all attention is for your wedding and your wedding only.

If you have any concerns your wedding date being a “popular” wedding date in the prime wedding season, then let us know. We can reserve any date with a small deposit.

Wedding Dates that you should AVOID

September 8th, 2009

It sounds so tempting to pick up a calendar, close your eyes and point to a date for your wedding….but think again! Keep in mind that YES this is YOUR wedding day, but that you are also inviting all kinds of family and friends to celebrate WITH YOU!

Always check with your entire bridal party and family to make sure there will not be any conflicts with the date you choose. Also, something you might not have thought of- there are some holidays or national events that might hinder your guests from booking that plane ticket or sending in their RSVP cards with a YES on them.

Steer clear of these days for your wedding!

Steer clear of these days for your wedding!

Here are a few dates to stay clear of when choosing your BIG DAY!

  • New Year’s and Christmas (Anywhere between the 23th of December and the 5th of January)
  • Thanksgiving (In US, the fourth Thursday of November)
  • Superbowl weekend
  • The World Series
  • In the US, the weekend before April 15 – tax day! Probably not too big of a deal, but you never know!
  • Memorial Day weekend
  • Labor Day weekend
  • Some say Memorial Day and Labor Day are great days but be aware of friends and family already having plans like the vacation they mapped out a year ago.
  • Mother’s Day
  • Father’s Day

Some wedding dates might even bring bad luck to your wedding day- but I will let you be the judge!

  • Weekends that include a Friday the 13th
  • Getting married on a Full Moon
  • The Ides of March (March 15)
  • September 11
  • Daylight savings days – let’s hope your guests remember what time it is that day!

Also keep in mind some religious days-

  • If you are Jewish, or many of your guests are Jewish, you may wish to avoid Friday evening weddings, and Saturday weddings before sundown. Don’t marry on Rosh Hashanah. Most synagogues frown on marriages during the Days of Awe (the 10 days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur), as that is a very busy time. Depending on your community or denomination, you may be able to get married immediately after Passover, or may have to wait until after either Yom HaShoah or Shavout.
  • If you are Christian, or many of your guests are Christian, you’ll want to avoid Holy Week (from Palm Sunday Weekend through Easter Sunday, and Christmas weddings (weekends around December 25). Some churches find Sunday weddings after the service a joyful celebration of the Sabbath, others frown on a wedding during the day of rest. Check with your congregation to be sure. Also, be aware that December is a busy month for most Christians, and thus it is better to plan a wedding for a different month if many of your guests are Christian.
  • If you are Muslim,or many of your guests are Muslim, be aware that Shawwal is considered a favorable time for a wedding, but the sacred months of Muharram and Ramadan are very bad times for a wedding. Many Muslim weddings occur on Sunday. You’ll want to consult your mosque before selecting a date, of course.

Budget Weddings-

If you are on a budget, try to stay away from Friday evening or Saturday evening weddings. Instead shoot for a Sunday wedding- or if you are having a smaller wedding then a weekday can work as long as all of your guests know far in advance.
